Robotic Surgery

Mr Athanasiou performs regularly robotic surgeries.

What is Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive technique that allows surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced precision, control, and visibility. Using a robotic surgical system, the surgeon operates through tiny incisions while seated at a console, guiding robotic arms equipped with advanced instruments.

This leading-edge approach offers numerous benefits over traditional open or laparoscopic surgery — including smaller scars, reduced pain, faster recovery, and fewer complications.

Robotic surgery merges surgical expertise with robotic precision — giving patients faster healing and excellent outcomes.

Why Choose Robotic Surgery?

Robotic-assisted surgery is transforming the way general surgery is delivered. It is especially effective for operations in delicate or hard-to-reach areas where accuracy is critical.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery:

Is Robotic Surgery Right for You?

Robotic surgery may be an excellent choice if you require treatment for conditions such as:

  • Gallbladder disease
  • Hernias (inguinal, umbilical, incisional)
  • Hiatus hernia and reflux disease
  • Stomach surgery (including benign and selected malignant conditions)
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

During your consultation, Mr Athanasiou will evaluate your condition and discuss the best approach — whether robotic, laparoscopic, or open surgery.

Common Robotic Procedures We Perform

At our centre, we use the Da Vinci XI robotic  systems to perform a wide range of general surgeries, including:

Robotic Hernia Repair

Highly precise and minimally invasive, reducing recurrence and discomfort.

Robotic Cholecystectomy

A modern keyhole approach to gallbladder removal with faster recovery.

Robotic Hiatus Hernia Repair

An advanced solution for repairing hiatus hernias and relieving reflux symptoms, with enhanced precision and quicker healing.

Robotic Stomach Surgery

Safe, effective treatment for certain stomach conditions, using advanced robotic techniques for optimal outcomes and recovery.

Robotic Anti-Reflux Surgery

Minimally invasive relief from chronic acid reflux, performed with unmatched surgical accuracy.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Surgery

On the day of your operation, you’ll be welcomed into the hospital by our friendly care team, who will guide you through each step and answer any last-minute questions you may have. Your procedure will be carried out under general anaesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep and won’t feel any pain during the surgery.

The operation will be performed using a robotic surgical system, which is controlled entirely by your surgeon. It’s important to know that the robot does not work on its own — it’s a highly advanced tool that allows your surgeon to perform the procedure with incredible precision and care. Most robotic surgeries are done through small “keyhole” incisions using a special high-definition 3D camera, which helps reduce tissue damage and speeds up recovery.

After the surgery is complete, you’ll be taken to the recovery area, where our nursing team will monitor you closely as you wake up from the anaesthetic. Depending on your recovery and the type of surgery you’ve had, most patients are able to go home the same day. Mr Athanasiou will let you know what to expect in your particular case.

Recovery and Aftercare

One of the benefits of robotic surgery is that recovery tends to be quicker and more comfortable than with traditional open surgery. While everyone heals at their own pace, most people experience less pain, smaller scars, and a faster return to daily activities.

Before you leave the hospital, we’ll give you easy-to-follow instructions on how to look after your wounds, manage any discomfort, and slowly get back into your usual routine. This might include advice on:

  • Taking pain relief medication (if needed)
  • Keeping your surgical wounds clean and dry
  • What activities you can do and what to avoid
  • When to resume work, exercise, or driving
  • Signs to look out for that may require medical attention

In most cases, patients can return to light activities such as walking or gentle household tasks within a couple of days. More strenuous activities may need to wait a little longer — Mr Athanasiou will discuss this with you during follow-up appointments.

We understand that recovering from surgery can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone. Our team is here to support you every step of the way — from the day of your surgery through to your full recovery.
